NOVA SCOTIA POWER OPENS EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRE
Nova Scotia Power crews are in the field working to restore power after high winds and heavy rain swept across the province overnight and continues this morning. The Emergency Operations Centre was activated at 8am to support the response.
“Our crews have been in the field overnight restoring power to those impacted by the high winds and rain,” said Sean Borden, NS Power Storm Lead. “We have over 300 field workers restoring power for customers across the province.”
Some areas of the province have experienced winds over 100 km an hour. Approximately 86,000 customers have lost power. As of 9am, 13,000 customers have been restored. Crews continue to work as quickly as possible to safely restore power.
“Our Emergency Response Centre provides a central place to coordinate planning for our restoration and response,” said Borden. “We are also working closely with the NS Emergency Management Office.”
Customers are encouraged to watch the outage map for the latest updates and estimated time of restoration. If customers don’t see their outage on the map – please report it online at outagemap.nspower.ca or call 1-877-428-6004.
QUICK FACTS: Wind Storms
- High winds can cause power lines to come down due to trees or branches falling on lines.
- The impact can vary depending on how fast the weather system moves across a region/province and the strength of the wind and how long it lasts.
- High winds can slow restoration efforts as crews will stand down when winds reach 80km/hour until it is safe to go back up in the buckets.
