Union Job Descriptions
Control Centre
Title: System Operator - Distribution
Summary:
- Responsible for issuing hold-offs and isolation permits for construction and maintenance crews working on the distribution system.
- Participate in developing, issuing, approving, and directing switching procedures.
- Responsible for tactical dispatch and deployment of routine and emergency-response crews and ensuring the communication of outage related information to the NSPI customers and other major stakeholder groups is done accurately and timely.
Qualifications:
- University or College education to the level of Technologist with studies in electrical power systems operation or the equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the company based on the System Operators Skills Matrix
- 2 years experience in a position directly related to the electric utility environment (eg. PLT, Regional Planner, Journeyman Electrician or Electrical Technician in System Maintenance, Electrical Engineer)
Hydro & Wind
Title: Electrical Technician
Summary:
- Operate all electrical/electronic equipment, including PLC's, solid state relaying, and remote SCADA telemetry
- Perform electrical/electronic maintenance, issue safe work permits, and assist with equipment overhauls.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power Discipline)
- 2 years’ experience maintaining electrical equipment related to power generation
- Proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment
- Understanding of electrical drawings and programming in an industrial setting
Title: Utility Operator
Summary:
- Support hydro system with working knowledge of generating units, controls, and plant auxiliary equipment
- Participate in unit overhauls and maintenance activities
- Issue and hold safe work permits.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in an electrical, mechanical discipline or journeyperson certification
- Understanding of operations related to water management activities
- Previous experience in Hydro operations and maintenance
- Hours towards an overhead crane operator certificate an asset.
Meter & Inspection Services
Title: Utility Worker II (Shift) (Line Inspection)
Summary:
- Work in urban, rural, and remote locations, with various types of terrains to inspect lines
- Operate truck and an ATV
- Use of technology applications for work assignments and tasks
Qualifications:
- Ability to perform labour duties
- Demonstrated skills in general maintenance
- Experience in a Utilityworker position an asset
- Experience in Transmission & Distribution Field Operations an asset
Title: Wiring Inspector
Summary:
- Complete wiring inspections and complex meter work
- Inspect domestic, commercial, industrial, and military electrical installations
- Install, commission, and maintain polyphase and single-phase meters
Qualifications:
- Construction Electrician certification
- Eligible for membership in the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI)
- 5 years’ experience as a Journeyperson Electrician in the domestic and commercial electrical construction field
- Well versed with the current edition of the Canadian Electrical Code and Nova Scotia Power utility standards.
Power Production
Title: Custodian
Summary:
- Custodian duties including, sweeping, stripping floors, wet mopping, dusting, and cleaning hallways, lunchrooms, offices, and washrooms
Qualifications:
- Ability to perform heavy labour duties
- Experience in cleaning methods and general knowledge of building maintenance
- WHMIS training
- Understanding of recycling requirements an asset
Title: Gas Turbine Operator Technician
Summary:
- Perform routine mechanical, electrical, controls, and instrumentation maintenance, repair and troubleshooting on Gas Turbines
- Work with the Energy Control Center, Regional Operations, Power Generation groups, and contractors
Qualifications:
- Red Seal Instrumentation Controls, or Red Seal Industrial Electrician or a Red Seal Millwright, or an Aircraft Mechanic/ Avionics
- Familiar with Gas Turbine Engines and its operations
- One years’ experience maintaining gas turbines as found in a generating station or similar industry is required
Procurement
Title: Storekeeper
Summary:
- Ensure secure and efficient operations in the storeroom and outside warehouse
- Ensure that material and tools needed for work are ready and available
- Material receiving, issuing, shipping, delivery, and cycle count
- Perform administration functions relating to storeroom
Qualifications:
- 3 years’ experience in material handling
- Certification in Forklift Operation, WHMIS and TDG training
- Intermediate computer skills
Title: Storekeeper Learner
Summary:
- Provide material support for the storeroom and outside warehouse
- Ensure that material and tools needed for work are ready and available
- Material receiving, stocking, issuing, packing, shipping, and maintaining cycle count
Qualifications:

Regional Operations
Title: Customer Planner
Summary:
- Update and process miscellaneous job orders and follow necessary process to ensure compliance with NSPI standards such as Joint Use, O/H & U/G, Environment, Rates and Regulations and billing.
- Deal directly with customers, municipalities, contractors, and other utilities to develop effective scoping plans for new services, required maintenance or miscellaneous request.
Qualifications:
Title: Powerline Technician
Summary:
- Perform all aspects of line maintenance, construction, customer service work including one-person work and response
- Ensure compliance with safe work methods and practices
Qualifications:
- Inter-provincial Red Seal Powerline Technician Certificate
- Proficiency in Powerline Technician skills
- Class 3 Nova Scotia Driver's License with a minimum of two years driving experience
Title: Powerline Technician Apprentice
Summary:
- Complete an 8000-hour Powerline Technician Apprenticeship (1000 hours completed with the Utility Line Work – Construction & Maintenance program)
- Perform line maintenance of Transmission and Distribution lines
- Work primarily on dead-line construction and de-construction projects throughout Nova Scotia.
Qualifications:
- Utility Line Work – Construction & Maintenance certificate or equivalent 2 years’ experience with troubleshooting electrical equipment
- Valid class 3 driver’s license
Title: Regional Planner
Summary:
- Make decisions surrounding field investigation, scoping, estimating and documentation.
- Plan operating, maintenance, and construction activities using computerized software
- Conduct distribution feeder inspections, inspect lines, identify, and scope capital project requests
- Provide cost estimates for customers and technical support for work crews
Qualifications:
- Grade XII education or equivalent.
- Inter-Provincial Red Seal Powerline Technician Certificate with one year’s experience or Electrical Engineering Technologist certificate with two-three years of transmission and distribution design experience
Substation Operations
Title: Electrical Technician
Summary:
- Install, commission, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment for the Transmission/Distribution System
- Electrical maintenance on reclosers, breakers, transformers, controls, protective relays, telecommunication, thermal and hydro equipment
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power Discipline)
- 2 years’ experience maintaining electrical equipment related to transmission and distribution
- Proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment
- Utility experience with Transmission Substation Equipment is an asset
Title: Industrial Electrician
Summary:
- Install, commission, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment on the Transmission/Distribution System
- Maintenance work on reclosers, breakers, transformers, controls, underground power systems, switches, and communication system
Qualifications:
- Journeyperson Industrial Electrician certification
- 2 years’ experience with troubleshooting electrical equipment
- Previous experience with Transmission/Distribution systems is an asset
Work Management & Resource Allocation
Title: Planning Coordinator
Summary:
- Ensure all permits, locates, joint use forms, and easements are valid and available to crews
- Track and monitor task and inquiries associated with customer service requests
- Complete administrative tasks to support the Work Management Resource Allocation team, T&D Team, Customer Care Team and Regional Planners
Qualifications:
- 5 years experience working in customer service
- Experience with computerized work management systems
- Knowledge of Joint Use and Make Ready processes
Title: Workforce Management Specialist - Operations
Summary:
- Ensure that routine and emergency customer commitments and internal work requirements are achieved in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible by managing and adjusting the overall work schedule.
- Responsible for minimizing variances between the planning and actual delivery of work orders and monitor work order performance to achieve customer commitments and productivity standards.

Summary:

Title: Buyer
Summary:
- Planning, and procurement of materials and services
- Ensuring that supply agreements are negotiated and managed in an effective manner
Qualifications:

- 3 - 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Working towards professional designation (i.e. CPP/SCMP/CPIM/CSCP) or formal training in procurement or inventory control would be an asset
Title: Procurement Specialist - Real Estate
Summary:
- Lead procurement process improvement projects with proactive analysis, market research, cross-functional teams, and stakeholder collaboration on issues and opportunities, all with the goal of achieving a balance between cost reduction and service improvements.
- Develop, negotiate, and maintain major supply arrangements, ensuring value is achieved through secure and effective agreements.

Title: Resource Allocation Manager
Summary:
- Create and communicate short-term work plans for work groups within Nova Scotia Power’s Meter & Inspection Services department

- Business degree with a minimum five years related experience
