Nova Scotia Power Grassroots Grant Helps Transform Food Access at North Sydney Food Bank
Halifax, NS – A grant from Nova Scotia Power's Grassroots Grants program is helping the North Sydney Food Bank enhance the way people facing food insecurity access essential items.
The food bank serves communities across Cape Breton's Northside, and has grown into a community hub offering food programs, a community garden, cooking classes, clothing support, and affordable housing for seniors.
A key milestone was the launch of the Community Choice Food Access Program, the first of its kind in Cape Breton. The program allows clients to choose groceries and household essentials that best meet their needs, creating a shopping experience similar to a traditional grocery store.
With support from Nova Scotia Power's Grassroots Grants program, the food bank bought a commercial fridge and freezer display unit, giving clients the ability to select fresh and frozen foods themselves.
"Because of the funding from Nova Scotia Power's Grassroots Grants program, we were able to buy a beautiful fridge and freezer. That really was a game changer for us," said Stacy Ellis, General Manager of the North Sydney Food Bank. "Without partners, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. They allow us to keep growing and introducing new programs,” said Ellis.
The addition has improved the overall client experience by offering more choice, reducing food waste, and helping people access items that best meet their needs. It also creates a more welcoming environment and strengthens community connections while supporting the growing number of individuals, families, and seniors relying on food bank services.
The North Sydney Food Bank now employs five full-time staff and is supported by dozens of volunteers who help deliver a wide range of community programs. As demand grows, support from businesses, community groups, and partners like Nova Scotia Power remains essential.
