Nova Scotia Power Activating Emergency Operations Centre

Halifax, NS – Nova Scotia Power will be activating its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Sunday, February 1 at noon ahead of the incoming winter storm forecasted to impact the province Sunday afternoon into Monday.

“Our team has been monitoring the weather and using that information to finalize plans so we’re ready to respond,” said Charlene MacMullin, Nova Scotia Power’s storm lead. “Based on the recent weather forecasts, we’re opening our Emergency Operations Centre to ensure we are prepared and coordinated in our response efforts as crews are getting ready across the province.”

The EOC provides a central place to coordinate planning for our storm response. The EOC is staffed with employees from all areas of the business and works closely with the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office (EMO) throughout the storm.

Nova Scotia Power is investing $1.3 billion over five years in work to improve reliability of service for customers by strengthening and modernizing the electricity grid. This includes an average of $250 million in projects across Nova Scotia each year. Over the last four years, we have also increased our investment in tree trimming from $25 million to $45 million.

Outage Information

  • We encourage customers to prepare for upcoming winter conditions and ready an emergency kit.
  • If a customer’s electrical equipment is damaged, such as a meter mast, they’ll need a certified electrician to make repairs before we can safely restore power.
  • Customers can report outages and get an estimated restoration time online at our outage map or by calling 1-877-428-6004.
  • Customers can stay up to date by following our social media channels for storm updates: FacebookInstagram, and X

Quick Facts: High Winds and Heavy Snowfall

  • High winds can cause power lines to come down due to trees or branches falling on lines.
  • High winds can slow restoration efforts as crews will stand down when winds reach 80 km/hr until it is safe to go back up in the buckets.
  • Challenging or dangerous road conditions can sometimes slow restoration efforts by our crews as they travel throughout communities.
