Nova Scotia Power Opens Emergency Operations Centre

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Power opened its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) as of 5am Saturday morning in response to severe thunderstorms impacting parts of the province causing outages.

“Crews have been working to safely restore power to our customers since the extreme weather system started impacting the province,” says Matt Drover, Nova Scotia Power’s EOC lead. “We have activated our Emergency Operations Centre as a central place to coordinate outage restoration and response. It is staffed with employees from all parts of the company.”

The significant amount of rain brought by the weather system has also caused some roads and highways to become flooded, impacting the ability of crews to quickly gain access to infrastructure and restore power to customers.  At peak, approximately 70,000 customers lost power due to lightning impacts on power equipment and infrastructure.

“We are working closely with the provincial Emergency Management Office (EMO) to coordinate our response efforts,” says Drover. “We will continue working to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.”

Customers can report outages and get the most up-to-date information on estimated times of restoration (ETRs) online at outagemap.nspower.ca or by calling 1-877-428-6004.
