NS Power working with partners to support customers in safely returning home

Our team at NS Power continues to coordinate its response with the Department of Natural Resources & Renewables (DNRR) and Fire Command Centres to assess damage to electrical equipment from the wildfires in Tantallon and Shelburne County.

As evacuation orders are lifted, and as soon as it’s safe to do so, we will be working to reconnect power to those customers allowed to return home. Onsite teams are also working with the Province and local contractors to coordinate efforts and help ensure a streamlined process to restore service for affected customers.

“Our hearts go out to all Nova Scotians who have been affected by the wildfires,” says Matt Drover, Sr Director, Energy Delivery with NS Power. “We know residents will be anxious to return home. Please know we are in your community, working with our partners to ensure you are able to return safely.”

Re-entry electrical checklist:

If you’re without power, make sure you follow these steps:

  1. Turn off or unplug any electrical appliances or equipment that was left on. This will help avoid any possibility of power surges when you’re reconnected.
  2. Next, do a visual inspection of your home as well as the electrical equipment running into your home, including your meter base, meter mast and wires. If your home itself and/or electrical equipment was impacted or damaged by fire, you may need a certified electrician to make repairs before crews can restore your power.
  3. Finally, if you see a downed wire around or near your home, call our outage line to report it: 1-877-428- 6004.

If your power is already reconnected when you return home, we recommend you still do an inspection of your electrical equipment.
