Storm Safety & Preparedness Checklist

Storm Safety & Preparedness Checklist

As Nova Scotians, we can always count on occasional bouts of stormy weather throughout the year. Whether we're expecting a hurricane or snow storm, the best thing each of us can do is be prepared. Below are helpful actions and tips you can take before, during, and after a storm to keep you and your family safe.

Before a storm

  • Add our 24/7 outage line number to your contact list in your phone: 1-877-428-6004
  • Bookmark our Outage Map for reporting and updates during power interruptions
  • Follow us on X (Twitter) for updates
  • Fully charge all mobile phones and a power bank charger
  • Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit
  • Plug your electronics into a surge protector or unplug your electronics if you don't have a protector
  • Do not touch electrical equipment that may have been exposed to water
  • Lower the temperature of your fridge to 40°F/4°C and your freezer to 0°F/-18°C
  • Ensure your contact information is up to date on MyAccount

During a storm

  • Report a power outage to 1-877-428-6004 or through our Outage Map
  • Locate your emergency kit
  • Ensure your flashlights are working
  • Check the Outage Map for the most up to date information and estimated time of restoration. The map updates every 10 minutes
  • Unplug all TVs, electronics, and appliances at home
  • Turn off all light switches except one—so you know when power is restored
  • Bring outdoor items, like patio furniture, inside
  • Avoid opening the fridge and freezer to retain the cold
  • Stay inside and away from windows and doors
  • Check the local news for weather updates and our social media channels

After a storm

  • If you see a downed line, act as if all wires live, stay clear, and report it at 1-877-428-6004
  • If your meter mast is damaged, you will require an electrical contractor to make repairs before we can restore your power. If you don't know an electrician in your area, you can call us and we'll help contact one for you, or visit here for a list of electricians ready to help
  • Turn on appliances and electronics one at a time to avoid a power surge
  • Be sure to refill your supplies so you are ready for the next storm

We recommend downloading our checklist and keeping it somewhere handy, like with your emergency kit, for easy reference.
